General information about diving in Nosy Be, madagascar

PERIODE :
The diving center is closed during February. In any cases, it is better not to come between the 15th of january and the 15th of March. During the rainy season, there's strong winds and the rain is bringing a lot of mud in the water which turns murky and rough.

Weather : Nosy Be has around 25 rainy days per year. (around 20 in the rain season, between the 15th january to the 15th of march) the rest of the year, the sun shines. some showers at night can appear.

Temperatures: summer (december - march) water is 30°C and more. Winter (july -september) la temperature decreases to 26°

Visibility :Rain season starts in december and finishes in march. Because of large areas of deforestation on the main land (Madagascar) heavy rains are washing, ripping cubic meters of mud from the uncovered areas by vegetation. This mud is driven by the rivers to the bays, diffused by the alternative tidal currents. Worst period is from the 15th of january to the 15th of march, visibility can decrease to 4m! Best period, Dry season (from may to september) visibility can increase to 25/30m on some spots.

Interests :The Nosy Be area is very well known for the big diversity and the prestine condition of the corals (around 410 species). The reef is also very rich in macro, paper fish, , ghost pipe fish, sea horse, pegasus (or seamothes), nudibranches.. For the "big stuff", Humpacks whales are in the Nosy Be Bay from july to the end of october. Mantas and whale sharks from november a january.

"perfume island " is a nickname for Nosy Be island, which was previously known for vanila and d'ylang ylang production, Then, with tourism development, Nosy Be is much more known for the beaches and reefs.

An exceptional bay :Apart from some exceptions during the rain season when tropical storms are passing by and in september when weather can be windy in the morning, the Ampasindava bay is always calm. The Main land is sheltering the bay , the water is flat in the morning and some waves appears around 1pm, due to the see breeze. From April to july, the strengh of thermical winds, decreases to a minimum, so the sea is flat even in the afternoon .
